Field Crops’ Pest Scouting Clinic July 19

(Lena) The 2024 crop production season has already seen its share of notable moments. Many farms have needed to change plans, adapt plans to meet new timeframes, and possibly conduct some extra management activities. One aspect of crop production is still there – pests! Pest scouting and management decision-making is the focus of an in-field clinic being offered in the Town of Lena, on Friday, July 19th. The event will begin at 10 a.m. at the Lena Town Hall, located at 6087 Goatsville Road.

University of Wisconsin-Madison, Division of Extension, is offering this clinic for area farms to learn more about the methods and resources available to them for their pest scouting efforts. Scott Reuss, Regional Crops/Soils Educator, will lead participants through fields of the area’s major crops and showcase recommended scouting techniques and management decision-making based on economic thresholds. Reuss will have identification information available, as well as threshold information for the pests which need to be on farms’ radar yet this year.

Insects of note that will be discussed include potato leafhopper, corn rootworm, Western Bean Cutworm, soybean aphid, and others. Diseases which will be discussed include white mold, tar spot, and other possibilities. Weed identification and later season management options will also be reviewed, as many farms are dealing with acres that were not planted normally or may have less crop growth than normal due to wet soils. Attendees are welcome to bring samples of weeds along for proper identification.

All farm personnel and interested persons are invited to attend this free clinic, which is being sponsored by the Extension Offices of Oconto, Marinette, Shawano, and Langlade Counties. Registration is not required, but if you have any questions, contact Scott Reuss, Regional Crops/Soils Educator, at 715-732-7510, text/call to 715-701-0966, or e-mail to scott.reuss@wisc.edu
