Families & Finances

 Our Mission

Families & Finance programs provide the tools Wisconsinites need to thrive as well-rounded, capable individuals and families. We support families in caring for each other in ways that promote growth and understanding. Our programs promote aging-friendly communities, coach effective parents and help families put technology, mindfulness and financial awareness to use.

Our Programming

Changing our Mental & Emotional Trajectory (COMET) Rural communities and farm families value supporting each other in times of need. COMET(TM) helps people take the next step after noticing someone might be struggling. It empowers friends and neighbors to be more prepared to support others’ mental health needs – especially before a crisis. This training doesn’t expect community members to “fix it” but trains people to feel comfortable initiating a supportive but potentially emotional conversation using a conversational seven-question guide. The training encourages participants to be comfortable and present with someone who is struggling but not yet at the point of crisis. It provides an easy way to start a conversation, teaches you how to exit the conversation in a supportive way, and offers resources to share with others if they need more than a listening ear.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers Powerful Tools for Caregivers classes help caregivers take better care of themselves while caring for a friend or relative. Whether you provide care for a spouse, partner, parent, friend, or a child with special needs; at home or in a care facility, whether down the block or miles away, yours is an important role. This course is for family caregivers like you! This six-week class series gives you the confidence and support to better care for your loved one – and yourself. In the class, caregivers receive The Caregiver Help book, which follows the curriculum and provides additional tools to address specific caregiver issues. The classes give caregivers tools to help:
• Reduce stress
• Improve self-confidence
• Manage time, set goals, and solve problems
• Better communicate your feelings
• Make tough decisions
• Locate helpful resources

Planning AHEAD Planning AHEAD is an end-of-life planning curriculum for all ages developed by UW–Madison Division of Extension faculty and staff. This 7-session research-based program will help participants understand how to prepare for the end of life for themselves or a loved one, and why it’s important to have a plan in place. Topics covered include: getting started, handling financial changes, choices in end-of-life care, advance medical and legal directives, final wishes, estate planning, and understanding grief.
