Farms are increasingly utilizing cover crops as a method of managing soil erosion and improving overall soil health. Cover crops are known to have benefits, but they can also have drawbacks in some situations. UW-Madison, Division of Extension, is conducting a Cover Crop Realities field day on October 4th to help farms think through the opportunities that cover crops offer, as well as how to optimally manage them for maximum benefit.
The field day is being hosted by Fifield Farms, located at 7488 Red Bank Road, Gillett, WI on Friday, Oct. 4, starting at 10 a.m. Fifield’s are one of five farms in the region that are taking part in a clover cover crop research project aimed at deriving accurate nitrogen management and economic return benefits from utilizing cover crops after winter wheat or similar crops.
Field day attendees will be able to view the research plots and take part in the discussions that will take place. Topics of discussion will include Cover Crops in Action, Cost-share opportunities; Possible Issues; and how Cover Crops fit into conservation and nutrient management plans. Leading the discussions will be a farmer panel, along with NRCS District Conservationist Jeff Maroszek and UW-Madison Educators Chris Bandura, Dan Marzu, and Scott Reuss.
The event is free to attend and will include a light lunch. Pre-registration is not required, but is appreciated to assist with meal planning. Register, or if you have any questions, by contacting Scott Reuss, Regional Crops/Soils Educator, at 715-732-7510, text/call to 715-701-0966, or e-mail to scott.reuss@wisc.edu
